I would recommend these to anyone that is looking for studio monitors like if you are making music or editing videos etc. The build quality is excellent, you can feel and hear that it's JBL. I have heard a lot of monitors and I can tell you that these are real reference monitors. They are not for amateurs. And for the price you can't beat them. I just got them, but so far they work great
When I first hooked these lil' guys up to my stereo, and turned on some music, I was impressed right away. Contrary to what numerous reviews have said, there definitely was bass response. I could hear low notes and basslines. The problem for me isn't a lack of bass. It's distortion in the extension monitor (the passive one, which for me is the left speaker). Classic electronic distortion: buzz and a bit of mid-range squawk whenever bass notes played. At first it seemed to happen only with bass sounds, but I eventually began hearing that distortion with any audio. I should note that I never blasted any music through the speakers: the volume knob never went beyond the 12 o’ clock (50%) position, and I always took care to turn down the sound source’s volume.
Is the left speaker malfunctioning, or is the distortion simply a design flaw present in all units? The latter seems doubtful: if that were the case, wouldn't every purchaser of the 104's experience this issue?
I hope to get a replacement that is distortion-free. The sound quality from the master speaker is clean and the frequency range is impressive.
EDIT: The replacement seems to be working fine. Awesome!
Not for high end mixing, but for listening in front of the computer, they are great. I am an audiophile, and these are a great buy, if you buy them for what they were intended for.
I have been listening for 2 days now and they have opened up and are very accurate. Exceptional sound stage and separation for a speaker this size. l Love them!
They are good for monitoring in a recording set up. Cost effective and sound very good. They give you a well balanced frequency response. Especially for the beginner on a tight budget. They have good volume and good low end punch for a speaker that size.
I have 2 pair. One pair in my studio connected to my deejay set up and the other in may bedroom connected to my streaming device on my TV. They sound better that most soundbar systems in that price range

Long version: My testing comparison was against an Audio Pro A10 and - unfairly - my full 5.1 hifi (Onkyo receiver, Dali sensor floorstanders, etc). They destroyed the A10, literally no comparison on any measure. And in some cases they showed detail In recordings that my hifi blended out.
Obviously this set of stereo speakers is no match for the range and power of a big expensive setup (whether hifi or studio). But for this size of speaker at this price? If you have the need, they’re perfect.
They have a very good range and would work well for listening to music right up to medium sized rooms (30-40sqm) at moderate volume levels.
For monitoring they have great detail. They show up bad recordings. I noticed fairly subtle mic/setup changes mid verse in well produced songs I’ve heard many time before and never picked up on.
Unlike some detailed speakers they’re not tiring/annoying to listen to, they’re dynamic and fairly warm. Bass and mid are smooth and punchy, trebles are crisp without ever being shrill or metallic.
They’re solid, good build quality and have a clean, modern look.
This is a simple, versatile setup, plug it into whatever you want. Way better than a Bluetooth/Smart speaker that will get out dated; there’ll always be some new tech, new codec, new ai assistant. In ten years these will still plug into the latest AI device while your first gen smart speaker is deep in landfill somewhere.
Finally, these speakers could be used in any way you want. They’re not just for sound engineers. No reason they couldn’t be used in any room for music or tv or whatever. I haven’t tried them outside, they have a big sound but would probably sound a bit lost outside of a smallish patio/pool setting, so maybe don’t use them as the PA system at your wedding.
